The Bare Essentials A Passion For Lingerie by Tracy Martin

If there is one thing that fashion magazines can’t reiterate enough, it’s that your underwear- while (hopefully) not in view- can either make or break your outfit. The dreaded visible panty line (VPL), unsightly bra straps and laddered stockings can make even the most expensive or glamorous clothing look cheap and nasty. Likewise, underwear that is too tight or too loose can also change the look of the clothing that you wear, with fleshy bulges or sagging body parts changing the shape of your fashion silhouette.

If you, or someone you know, has a passion for lingerie and undergarments, then you have something in common with author and fashion aficionado Tracy Martin, who has written this handy little book about said topic. Featuring beautiful illustrations by Helen Simms, this pretty book delves into the world of underwear and pays homage to creations made of silk, satin, lace, Lycra, cotton and even PVC. Beginning with the fascinating history of women’s underwear throughout the ages (corsets, bustles and Wonderbras all make appearances in this section), Martin then focuses on several types of lingerie and the most appropriate occasions to wear them. Areas covered include in the boudoir (this section includes burlesque styles), bridal lingerie, sporting, at-home lounging (pyjamas and nighties are included here), shapewear, and underwear as outerwear. She includes useful tips about choosing the correct underwear for each occasion, and the best ways to preserve, wash and maintain your undergarments for optimum results. At the end, Martin produces a checklist (of sorts) containing all the lingerie essentials that a woman will ever need.

Fashion devotees and lingerie lovers will enjoy this little gem- with pretty pictures, useful information and even an inbuilt gift-tag/ bookmark, everything you will ever want to know about the hidden heroes of every woman’s wardrobe is captured in this lovely book.
