Revival: You're Among Friends - Book Review
In a small town in rural Wisconsin life changes forever when for one day the dead suddenly come to life. The risen dead aren't zombies, or at least not the mindless, flesh eating kind, but rather apparently ordinary people who just want to go back to their old lives. Police officer Dana Cypress is put on a task force dealing with crimes and issues relating to the “revivers”. This proves no easy task as the town is under quarantine and cabin fever sets in, causing some of the locals to do things they might regret. Her younger sister tags along on an investigation, revealing secrets from her own past in the process.
Journalist May Tao finds herself a national celebrity after she happened to be filming at a mortuary when the revival happened and was able to break the story. Now she tries to dig a bit deeper and finds there may be even more strange things afoot. Something unearthly is out in the woods and a travelling exorcist is convinced that he will finally find evidence of the existence of demons.
I love comics with interesting, fully fleshed out female characters, and
Revival has several. It also has an intriguing plot, realistic dialogue and moments of tooth gritting, table gripping horror. The phrase “sharp little daisies” will stick in my mind mind for a long time to come.
This volume collects issues 1-5 of the comic, plus a story that was given out for free comic book day that gives a bit more background about Revival Day.
Revival is an ongoing series with 6 volumes of trade paperbacks out to date.
