Halloween Books For Kids

Posted 2015-10-31 by Catherine Van Bergenfollow

Halloween has always been a big international event- particularly in America, where trick-or-treating is an activity taken very seriously by younger children, and dress-up parties are of high importance to those who are older. Over the last few years, Australian retail stores have jumped onto the bandwagon, cashing in on the ‘holiday’ and selling a wide range of costumes, junk food and decorations for the big event. As is usually the case, there have also been a few books released for the occasion, and some of those are listed below:

1000 Spooky Stickers – Stella Baggott and Lauren Ellis

This book houses a thousand stickers of a spooky persuasion that would be perfect for those who want to decorate anything in pictures of cartoon ghosts, mummies, skeletons, vampires, monsters, wizards and witches. There are ‘background’ pages at the start of the book if you want to arrange the stickers into different scenes (like a vampire café, ghost train or dungeon laboratory, for example), or you can use the stickers to decorate invitations, artwork or cards.

The Halloween Creativity Book

If you’re looking for an activity book that features tasty magic ‘potions’, various arts and crafts, drawing activities, puzzles and games, costume ideas, fun stencils, ghost stories and colourful stickers, then this is the one for you. This is the ultimate Halloween-themed activity book for kids interested in spookiness and all forms of creativity, and is sure to keep them entertained for hours. Spiral-bound and full of interesting facts, this book is probably best for higher age primary school students, who are more likely to appreciate the activities involved.

Spooky House

This lift-the-flap board book is perfect for young children who aren’t easily afraid of ghouls and ghosts, witches and monsters. Each page spread has a four-line rhyme which describes the scene on the pages, as each of the spooky characters prepare for their Halloween party. The illustrations are colourful, fun and cute (rather than scary), and each page features a few flaps to look behind- giving the kids plenty to discover as they work their way through the story.

Emu’s Halloween – Anne Mangan (Illustrated by David Cornish)

Halloween gets a uniquely Australian twist in this picture story book, when a group of animals decide to help Emu have the scariest Halloween party ever. They dress up in creepy outfits (except for Red-Back Spider, who goes as herself), and help to decorate Emu’s home with all types of spooky garb. They play traditional games (bobbing for apples), carve faces into pumpkins to create jack-o-lanterns, eat sweets and tell scary stories. Can they make this the best Halloween party Australia has ever seen? Featuring a rhyming story and colour pencil illustrations, this book is slightly different from the usual offerings, and will be popular with any children who love Australian fauna.
