The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft. It's just really well done. Atmospheric and slow building. In the first paragraph Lovecraft creates a new subgenre.

I love the stories of Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, but I can't actually get on with the style in which they have been written. I do, however, like the style of Edgar Allan Poe.
