The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft. It's just really well done. Atmospheric and slow building. In the first paragraph Lovecraft creates a new subgenre.
I shall check it out.

I was just thinking the other day that I don't read horror books lol Then I remembered that I've read almost everything ever written by Stephen King and Dean Koontz...Not "classic" although I'm sure they will be one day!

I love the stories of Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, but I can't actually get on with the style in which they have been written. I do, however, like the style of Edgar Allan Poe.
Dracula by Bram Stoker or Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
The Cask of Amontillado', 'The Pit & the Pendulum' by Edgar Allan Poe. And 'Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde' by R.L. Stevenson.

They're very, very scary & the endings' are not what one expected!
