Shel Silverstein, The Giving Tree, Children's book, life lessons
Craft done by my son for a school project.

One of my favourite children's book is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. I have used the book in several workshops and panel discussions especially with children as a spin off to teaching moral lessons.

Have you read the book? What lessons did you draw from the book?

I love the craft project in the picture. Very creative!

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the book because I'm not sure giving until you're completely used up is a healthy lesson.
Thank you for the compliment on the craft. We changed the leaves on the project to paper leaves and still have it displayed in the kids' room even after a year.
My take on the book is a bit different than that expressed by Jennifer. I think the tree loved the child so much that it tried to help him in all stages of his life, so the concept of unconditional love is most overwhelming for me. When I am using the book in workshops, I talk about concepts which are not so obvious in the story, i.e. where to draw the line in a friendship and how is it okay to say no even to a best friend (like the tree did not say no and was exhausted in its resources of giving).
I've never heard of the book, but like Jennifer, I love the craft project.
