Whether we realise it or not, we often pick up a lot of the things our family members say, and insert them into our own vernacular. Never is this more true than when we are talking about things that our parents have said. Erin McHugh, the editor of this collection, didn’t realise just how much she quoted her long deceased mother until a friend pointed it out, and then was fascinated when she noticed just how common an occurrence this is. This book is a collection of some of the things that various mothers have said over the years, as shared by their children. Often funny, sometimes awkward, occasionally strange and many times wise, some of these quotes and anecdotes are sure to sound familiar to you as you read through the pages. This is a fun little book to sift through for some humorous motherly adages.

This bright pink pocket-size book features quotes from celebrities (singers, actors and presenters), as well as authors, poets, and historical figures. Celebrating mothers in general, the book also features relevant proverbs, and is interspersed with small declarations like ‘I can always turn to you’ and ‘you make me feel special and loved’, among others. This would make a lovely addition to any small present.

Congratulations You're A Mum – Kate Freeman



Similarly to the quote book above, this book is pocket-sized, although it seems to be aimed more at new mums, rather than ‘established mothers’. Featuring quotes from a whole range of people (although I admit I didn’t recognise that many of the names), this book is full of wisdom for new mothers about the things that they will encounter now and in the future. This little book aims to put a smile on their faces as they struggle through some of the more difficult times ahead, and gives them heart as they embrace the more joyful ones.

A Mother Is A Story: A Celebration Of Motherhood – Samantha Hahn



Easily the prettiest of this quote book selection, this book is also slightly larger than the others, which have much smaller dimensions. Aimed at younger, trendier mothers, this book features quotes printed onto lovely watercolour backgrounds and illustrations. Many of the quotes featured in this book are longer than others from similar books, but they seem to resonate and relate more with the everyday mother, rather than being just a collection of wise words. Hahn’s collection is both colourful and artistically presented and would make a stylish gift for a fashionable mum.
