Alf Wight, a.k.a James Herriot, is best known for his books about his life as a country vet and the television series, All Creatures Great and Small
that was based on them. This collection of short stories are sweet, wholesome stories for children which could help develop an interest in and love of animals. It is one of the books included in the Ambleside Online curriculum
for homeschoolers using the Charlotte Mason method
but you don't have to be a homeschooler to appreciate this simple, joyful book.
This edition is beautifully illustrated by Ruth Brown. The Yorkshire countryside really comes to life and the animals are very realistically drawn, with attention to their body language. This helps make the transition for children from very simple picture books to "wordier" stories a bit easier.
James Herriot's Treasury for Children
is a hardcover book I could definitely see being reread many times and kept to be passed down to the next generation.
