Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Random House UK via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thirty-six year old Michelle spends her days slaving away in a chicken factory to support her teenage daughter, Josie. It's far from the life she had planned, and she longs for a handsome man in a naval dress uniform to come and take her away from it all as in her favourite movie An Officer and A Gentleman. Unfortunately dating's not easy when you're a single mother living in the shadow of your dead older sister. Then when Josie declares her intention of losing her virginity with her deadbeat boyfriend, Sean on her sixteen birthday, which happens to be Christmas Eve, Michelle hatches a desperate, drunken plan to win back her daughter's respect and get her own life back on track. She bets Josie that somehow she will marry George Clooney by Christmas.
This is a very funny contemporary romance in the style of Sophie Kinsella (author of the Shopaholic series). It was easy to feel for Michelle, caught in an impossible situation and trying so hard to do the right thing that she becomes her own worst enemy. The characters behave like real people, warts and all, and there was laugh out loud humour in places. It possibly helped that for some reason I imagined Michelle's voice as sounding like Caitlin Moran, who could make reading the phone book aloud funny.
I Will Marry George Clooney (By Christmas) is a fun romp that will leave you feeling cheerful as Christmas approaches. I will definitely be checking out Tracy Bloom's first novel No-one Has Sex on a Tuesday.
