Honestly, I was unsure of what to make of this book when I began reading it. I know everyone says, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, but I couldn’t help it. I was intrigued, interested and excited to begin reading. As M.R James is one of the more famous gothic/horror genre writers of the 20th century, I did not want to be disappointed by a so-called true great, however in my opinion he definitely lived up to his status.
This book is broken up into different stories. Some tend to overlap but even so, I found each story to be masterfully written and gripping. I suppose I picked the right time of year to read such a book and I can promise it will give you chills long after you put the book down.
From haunted houses to superstitious numbers and dark-haired beasts with talon like feet, M.R James is great in creating suspense and makes the reader wonder what will happen next. He is great at making you long for more and I can guarantee you will not want to put this book down. They are all short stories so I haven’t gone into a major dissection of the book as to not reveal what happens.
Don’t let the year of publication or the fact that it is not a modern day story put you off. I often find myself that books of this age can be quite difficult to become immersed in and there’s often a time that I will just give up not long into the story. However this book is beautifully written, it flows so well and the stories will keep you entertained for hours.
A great Halloween read!
