I have noticed a trend of late where more books are being published with either a coloured or decorated page edge rather than the standard white. While this is not an uncommon sight- particularly in older leather-bound classics or bibles (which sometimes have gold-edged pages)- it has become more common to see your average paperback being printed with a brightly-hued edging. And don’t think that it’s just books aimed at kids and teens that are rocking this trend- crime novels and biographies are also sporting fluoro/ metallic/ text printed page edgings…
Do you think this adds appeal or value to the appearance of a book? Do you think it looks tacky or cheapens the look of a novel? Do you own any books like this? Would you buy a book with a coloured/decorated page edge if it was available? Or do you prefer the standard white edges instead?
#Question I hadn't really noticed this was a thing. Maybe I just haven't bought new paperbacks in a while (I read a lot of ebooks, and a lot of my paper ones are secondhand or library books). I think it wouldn't make much difference to how the books look on the shelf because all mine are displayed with the spine facing outwards, but given a choice I'd prefer plain white paper.
All of the books pictured are new releases (from the last few months or so) that have coloured/decorated edges, so it's definitely becoming more common. How popular it is with readers, however, is still a mystery to me...
