Many authors have written about food to great effect, to create a mood or to illustrate a point.

Which do you think is the best food scene you have ever read?

I think my favourite is the scene in The Bell Jar where Esther eats an entire bowl of caviar with avocado just because she can.

The grocery store scene in Linda Jaivan's Eat Me is hilarious. I can't say "lurve blender" without giggling.

Then there is the part in Chuck Palahniuk's Haunted with the tattoo (if you have read it you will know what I mean). And a similar thing in Dexter is Delicious by Jeff Lindsay which gave me the shivers.
I have read many wonderful food scenes in books, and I don't think I could name you my favourite, simply because I cant remember them all. Here are a few that have stuck with me though:

1. The scene in Roald Dhal's 'Boy' when he and his friends place a dead rat in the sweet jar of an old woman's sweetshop.

2. When the fat boy from Roald Dhal's 'Matilda' is forced to eat an entire chocolate cake on stage.

3. The description of the 'drink me' bottled water in 'Alice in Wonderland'.
Lots of kids books -- they use food where adult authors would use sex. But with food you can be more explicit. Enid Blyton comes to mind.

But the best single episode along these lines was Farmer Cotton's mushrooms from Lord of the Rings.
