#Aussie Poets

When I think about ‘Australian poetry’ my immediate thought is bush poetry, and it’s certainly popular even now in our less poetic era. If you’d like to give Australian poetry a go here are a few lists to get you started:

Australia’s early poets
G.E. Evans 1863-1909
C.J. Dennis 1867-1938
Harry ‘Breaker’ Morant 1864-1902
A.B. (Banjo) Paterson 1864-1941
Henry Lawson 1867-1922

The Ladies
Oodgeroo Noonuccal (Kath Walker) 1920-1993
Mary Gilmore 1865-1962
Dorothea Mackeller 1885-1968
Judith Wright 1915-2000
Dorothy Porter 1954-2008

Modern Aussie Poets
Joel Turner 1987-
Omar Musa 1984-
Les A. Murray 1938-
David Malouf 1934-

And finally some anthologies of collected poetry to whet your appetite
Thirty Australian Poets (poets born after 1968) (UQP 2011)
New Oxford Book of Australian Verse (Oxford Uni Press 1986/1991)
Penguin Anthology of Australian Poetry (Penguin 2009)

Australian poetry really does offer something for everyone, whether it’s quintessential bush poems or modern rap and hip hop, so why not take some time to relax and enjoy some Aussie verse.
