A Haunted Love Story is the true story of the Ghosts of the Allen House located in Monticello, Arkansas. I picked this book up at the Haunted Bookstore in Melbourne during a recent visit and what a fascinating read this book has been. The bookstore is filled with paranormal books and a coffin as part of a display. It was an interesting place to visit.
The author, Mark Spencer wrote A Haunted Love Story because people wanted to know about the ghosts and after his personal experiences living with the Allen ghosts, I am glad he did.
The story beings when Mark and Rebecca Spencer began to enquire about buying the Allen House. At that time, they lived in a rental that had an integral link to the ghosts of the Allen family, although they did not know it at the time. You discover this further into the story.
Mark Spencer had taken up the role as Dean of the School of Arts at the university. He was a total skeptic yet it seems that the ghosts of the Allen house were going to lead him, his wife and their children to live with and listen to them. Mark and his wife, Rebecca bought the house in 2007 and were told "it's haunted you know" by numerous people but that didn't stop them from buying their dream home. They didn't care nor believe that it was haunted at the time. They loved the mansion and felt it was the right thing to do.
Against the odds, the owner of the Allen House (at that time) did sell it to them and they moved in.
Once they had moved in, the family began to experience faceless phantoms on the stairs, a doppelganger spirit that took on the form of their children and liked to appear in front of Mark and Rebecca. They also experienced lights flickering and exploding, cupboards and doors opening and closing by themselves and an eerie haunting in the downstairs bathroom that resulted in the kids and the cat avoiding that area of the house.
In the midst of all this paranormal activity, they had known that one of the Allen daughters, Ladell Allen, had committed suicide in the master bedroom in 1948. No-one knew why she had taken her life but there was plenty of speculation. The people of the town had numerous theories, however, in 2009, Mark Spencer felt drawn to the attic where he discovered letters of a hidden love affair between Ladell Allen and the love of her life, Prentiss Savage.
The book follows Prentiss' letters to Ladell as they reconnect after many years apart. It ends in tragedy and deep unfulfilled love for Ladell. The book also follows the life of the Spencer family as they deal with paranormal invesitgators, random people and tourists wanting to see the ghosts, seeing and hearing spirits, finding historical items and hosting ghost tours as well as hosting professional paranormal investigators who used their equipment to capture evidence of the hauntings.
Mark Spencer is no longer a skeptic after finding the letters, researching facts from ghost encounters and living with the Allen Family Ghosts in the Allen House on a daily basis.
This is a special book containing historical facts, ghost encounters, eerie coincidences and the true life story of love that is lost. A Haunted Love Story is wonderfully written. I could not put it down.
The book is also available on Amazon if you would like to download it.
